Here you can read up on our past events of 2008! Enjoy!
For our October meeting we invited Barry Westwell for a night of Magic!
Over the last few years Barrie has returned to performance in the guise of Illusionist and would be singer (in the style of Rex Harrison but without the sophistication). It was a smaller setting this time and Barry performed his magic. Some were sceptical at first, but soon he won the audience over.
Our September meeting was hosted by Stephanie from Chaos Art!
The Picassos' came to the fore. We enjoyed an evening which began with a short introduction to Art and specifically drawing! Stephanie explained that drawing and the use of light and shadow lies at the heart of each art work.
After that we all had a chance to out this to the test. Each of us drew three pictures of a normal cup, with coal, graphite, wachs, water, rubber etc. Some very interesting pictures were the result and we all had afun evening! And might be a bit more creative in future!
Our August meeting was a social event, a picnic in Peckham Rye Park, yes outdoors!
The weather god was in our favour and we had a nice time out in the park.
We had picnic with food and drinks, which were all provided by Dolce Vita Catering, which is the company of Tracey our member. All the food was polished away, and not a drop of bubbly was left! We chatted, socialised and had great fun.
Since then we had so much feedback, it was an event enjoyed and an encore is being called for!
Our July meeting was our Flower event. With the help of Sally of Dulwich, our local florist on Lordship lane we all got to learn how to arrange a lovely flower display and what to look out for. We had loads of fun, and we all had a lovely flower display to take home with us.
Andrew Cunningham, Hypnotherapist was our guest at our June meeting! We all heard about hypnotherapist and what it is all about and what they can and cannot do. We even had a group experience transporting us to some other place. Andrew Cunningham Biography
.jpg)
Andrew is a clinical hypnotherapist who has worked in Harley St for the last 8 years. Seeing a large number of clients with a wide range of issues and problems.
He has appeared on several TV programmes such as "Faking It" and more recently "Tonight with Trevor Mcdonald"
Andrew does not view hypnotherapy as a 'magic trick' where the client has no input or choice in the therapy. In fact he feels that hypnotherapy does the opposite, by empowering the client to make the changes that they want to make.
Andrew lives in East Dulwich with his partner and two children.
Here is a brief outline of the run of the evening:
- Background to hypnosis...a bit of history about Mesmerism and stage hypnosis...what hypnotherapy is not!
- Discussion about the power of suggestion
- The applications of hypnotherapy
- Teaching self hypnosis to the group
In May we met at the Magdala for our RESOLUTION MEETING in preparation for the AGM - because our vote counts!
More details are on the National Federation Website under: http://www.womens-institute.co.uk/standard.aspx?id=11483
BOOKSWAP!
We had a bookswap. Ladies brought books and swapped them for a different one.
NIBBLES!
Thanks to everyone who brought nibbles along - much appreciated and consumed!
Following is what we voted on, we passed the Ban for Bottom Trawling motion (the new amended version). We did not pass the inappropriate improsonment of severley mentally ill motion because we felt it was to wide and not achievable in its current form. If an appropriate amendment is tabled we might take it differently.
Resolution Shortlist for the 2008 AGM!
Ban of Bottom Trawling
This resolution calls for:
A ban on the fishing practice known as ‘bottom trawling’ where it causes catastrophic loss of marine life as opposed to a complete ban on all forms of bottom trawling.
What can be done on this resolution:
- Lobby the UK Government to commit to a Marine Act in 2008.
- Lobby MEPs to support a strong EU Marine Strategy Directive.
- Lobby the Directorate-General for Fisheries for strong environmental protection within the Marine Strategy Directive.
- Get involved in the campaigns of other environmental groups.
- Encourage members to buy sustainably sourced fish.
- Lobby supermarkets to source seafood from sustainable sources. Asking questions about your seafood sends a clear message to supermarkets and restaurants that people do care where their seafood comes from.
This resolution calls for:
In October 2007, the Chief Inspector of Prisons, Anne Owers CBE, concluded in her review of mental health in prisons that "prison has become, to far too large an extent, the default setting for those with a wide range of mental and emotional disorders."
What can be done on this resolution:
Get in touch with MPs, particularly those with a women’s prison in their constituency, to seek a positive response to the Corston Review and for the Government to actively set out to reduce the numbers of women in prison, especially those with mental health problems. Gather information – Audits could be carried out on the local mental health care services available, to establish what services are needed in the area. Audits could also be conducted with local police, magistrates and judges to gather information about the availability of diversion and liaison schemes in police stations and courts. This information could be used to inform a second stage of Lord Bradley’s review. Inform others – Take opportunities to tell family, friends and any community groups to which you belong about the inappropriate imprisonment of the severely mentally ill. WI members can also submit letters to local and national papers and call into local radio stations. Be active locally – Ensure that discussions and initiatives at local government level are informed about the reality of offenders who are mentally ill. Useful bodies include: local authorities, Chairs of local and County Councils, local Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnerships, Primary Care Trusts, local Health Authorities and Mental Health Trusts and the Local Government Association Safer Communities Coalition.Volunteer – WI members could offer to help in, or set up, local centres designed to support people with mental health needs in the community and to help to resettle ex-patients and ex-prisoners.Contact your local women’s prison – if there is a women’s prison in the area, your local WI can approach the Governor about voluntary opportunities linked with supporting women in the community to aid resettlement and to prevent further offending. Join local campaigns - Federations and WIs could join local campaigns with groups in their areas, such as MIND and Nacro.
Dowdy Decking? Languishing lawn? Sad-looking shrubbery? Tim Mackley is the expert!
For April's event we welcomed Tim Mackley , a local garden designer, who presented to us on design concepts, gardens in general and offered us some ideas for Garden Design with a focus on urban gardens. We had a 'Gardeners' Question time' session where Tim answered all those burning questions we had and gave helpful advise to members who brought photos of their garden. Now we have no excuses anymore to make our gardens our pride and joy this coming summer! Tim has his own website, please go to: http://www.timmackley.co.uk/
